This is what you do to get rid of ants.
If you can find out the origin of these ants and their ant hill, make a blend of citrus peelings and water and pour it over the ant hill. Alternatively pouring about 3 gallons of very hot water on to the mounds, can kill all the ants and cause the ant hill to be abandoned. This way you would not have ants anywhere near your house.

Ant Bait
A garden around your house can have aphids, white flies and mealy bugs. These insects feed on the sap of plants and constantly excrete honeydew which in turn attracts ants. So do some pest control and get rid of these garden pests first if you want to keep the ants away. You can create liquid bait for the ants that can get rid of them. This bait is made of boric acid and corn syrup and the concoction has to be heated till all the boric acid has dissolved. Now use this solution at places that ants frequently visit in the garden and the house. You need to wet these places before you put in drops of the solution. Continue doing this for at least a fortnight or more, and this can keep the ants out of your house for ever. Using this solution in the house is not recommended where children and pets are present.

How Ants Get In Your House
You can always find the place from which ants are entering your home. Just follow the trails of the ants as they make their way into your house to the food that they have got wind off. You can even create these trails by laying out some sugar as bait. Once you have spotted these ingress points, see whether it is in anyway a crack or some such, which you can seal. Using a silicone sealant is the best way to make a permanent seal. Maybe the seals around the doors or window jambs are not good enough and allow the ants to come in through them. In that case you can get somebody to redo these seals or alternatively place some red chili pepper, dried peppermint or borax at these entry points. The ants will keep away from these and may solve your ant problems.

No Trash Means No Ants
It is very necessary to see that the kitchen counter or the dining table is not full of crumbs, which in turn would only attract ants. So clean up after every meal or meal preparation and keep those tables and counter tops clean. See that the trash counters where you do dispose of your scraps are as far from the house as possible. If you have to keep some food items on the kitchen counter or dining table see that they are stored in airtight containers or tightly wrapped in film or other material, which does not allow any ingress to ants. Perishable food needs to go into the refrigerator, especially in summers, when fruits and vegetables may tend to spoil. Ants need water as well as food. Deny them this by always having your floors and all flat areas clear of any pools or water. One place that seems to get neglected by default is the space around any house plants, where water may have spilled over during the watering process.

Keep Ants Away From Food
Ants are part of the ecological system of the planet, and there is no way we can wish them out our lives. Let us say they are natural scavengers whose job it is to clean up the mess that quite a lot of people seem to generate where ever they go. So if you want to keep them away from the places that you are living in what you have to do is to eliminate the food, water and housing areas that even ants need for survival.
So, if you really want to get rid of ants - keep food away from ants
